Russian market of cable and satellite TV remains the largest in Europe
Russian pay TV market remains the largest in Europe: at year-end 2014 it covers 37.6 million households connected to the technologies of cable, satellite and IPTV, data from a study of J'son & Partners Consulting says.
By comparison, according to Digital TV Research Ltd, German pay TV subscriber base is 22.8 million households; the same indicator in the UK reached 16.1 million households. Experts say, that the subscriber base of pay TV in Russia will continue to grow: the number of subscribers will increase to 45.2 million households by 2019. The penetration of pay TV service will reach 81%.
Pay TV market volume in Russia was 66.5 billion rublesat year-end 2014. The largest segment is cable television (32.5 billion rubles). Revenues from satellite broadcast services reached 22.5 billion rubles, while revenues of IPTV operators approached 11.4 billion rubles. The highest number of connections was in segments of satellite TV and IPTV.
The largest players on Russian pay TV market at year-end 2014 are "Tricolor TV" (market share - 29%), "Rostelecom" (21%), MTS (7%), "ER-Telecom" (7%) and "Orion Express" (7%). More than half of the subscriber base is generated by the Volga (Privolzhsky) and the Central Federal District. In terms of number of pay TV subscribers the Central Federal District playing the lead - 34% of all Russian market.
