The Russian advertising market is experiencing significant growth, with analysts projecting a 36% increase by 2025: Television Advertising is expected to grow by 23%, Digital Channels are forecasted to rise by 25%, E-commerce Advertising is projected to surge by 62%, Outdoor Advertising is anticipated to increase by 29%, Audio Advertising is set to grow by 24%, Press Advertising is expected to see a rise of 5%. Collectively, retail and e-commerce, finance, and pharmaceuticals are expected to account for 52% of total advertising investments. However, a significant challenge facing the market is the saturation of advertising channels. By the New Year holidays, television, radio, and outdoor advertising spaces are projected to be nearly 100% occupied.

This growth indicates a full recovery of the Russian advertising market from recent crises, including the impact of global advertising system blockages. The market now demonstrates more stable growth than in previous years. Key drivers of this expansion include the integration of new technologies and the scaling of advertising formats in messengers and marketplaces.

What to expect from the coming year of 2025? Experts from RMAA have identified the main trends to watch in the upcoming 2025.

Reflection of Global Trends in the Russian Market

The Russian advertising market is a distinctive environment where conventional marketing mechanisms may not always function as they do in other countries. Advertising in Russia employs unique tools and possesses its own specific characteristics. Nevertheless, certain global trends inevitably permeate the Russian media space.

Optimisation for Voice Queries

Recently, Google revealed that more than 20% of users already utilize voice search on their smartphones almost daily. This is not just a new trend – it’s a challenge for advertising systems. Companies are massively adapting their SEO strategies to account for conversational language patterns and secure top rankings in search results.

Russia is no exception. Following the rest of the world, the country is witnessing a growing adoption of both voice searches and smart assistants – but with its own systems. Popular assistants like Alexa and Siri are far less common in Russia. However, Russians enthusiastically embrace Alice by Yandex, which was introduced in 2017. Smart speakers featuring Alice are incredibly popular, and over seven years, the number of users has grown to 64 million people – today, one in five households in the country has a smart speaker. Following the integration of the YandexGPT language model into the voice assistant this spring, the number of queries increased by another 20%.

Marusya by VK is also popular. There are other voice assistants as well, as this segment is actively developing today. This serves as an important “wake-up call” for all advertisers in Russia to consider the Yandex and VK voice search capabilities. Otherwise, there is a significant risk of losing a substantial portion of the ‘hot’ audience.

AI

AI takes center stage in marketing strategies for 2025. Algorithms are used for a variety of purposes, the main ones being:

  • generating texts and visual content;

  • personalizing advertising messages;

  • analyzing user behavior.

It is expected that by 2028, global investments in artificial intelligence for marketing and advertising will exceed $107 billion.

There is a lot of valuable information to share about the implementation of Artificial Intelligence, but one of the main trends for brands in Russia is the rise of Telegram chatbots.

Why? It’s simple. A bot accelerates sales, maintains continuous contact with the consumer, and reduces the distance between them and the company. It is a fast and convenient feature that minimizes the likelihood of refusals. Various options of strategies can be applied here, but the most important one is sales.

Site Optimization for Mobile Versions

In the last quarter of 2023, mobile devices accounted for 58.67% of global web traffic. In the second one, surveys showed that 96.2% of respondents accessed the internet via mobile devices. Although these people also use laptops or desktop PCs, the percentage is significantly lower (62.8%).

This indicates one thing: the average user overwhelmingly prefers using a phone over a computer. Advertisers worldwide are adapting to this trend.

In Russia, over 130 million users are regular internet consumers, with mobile traffic accounting for approximately 95.1%. This forces brands to consider a mobile-first approach. It cannot be said that this trend has just emerged. However, while it previously held less importance, it has now become critical.

The main optimization goals are interface simplicity, loading speed, and adapting content for small screens. For deeper analytics of mobile traffic, tools such as AppMetrica, Mixpanel, Adjust, and others (depending on specific tasks) take center stage.

Interactive Content and Gamification

Users increasingly value engagement: from AR filters to mini-games in mobile apps – interactivity transforms advertising and sales into an exciting story, often with the added incentive of a bonus.

The global gamification market is expected to reach $15.43 billion in 2024, with an average annual growth rate of 25.84% projected through 2031.

In Russia, gamification is currently implemented primarily by large ecosystems such as banks, marketplaces, and federal retailers. However, this approach is beginning to penetrate deeper into all layers of business. Moreover, advertising platforms enable the launch of strategies tailored to this format, for instance, Rewarded Video in Yandex.Direct or ads in VK Stories launched via VK Ads.

UGC

By 2025, brands will increasingly give a voice to their consumers. Recommendations, video reviews, flash mobs, and challenges involving customers build trust more effectively than traditional advertising campaigns.

The simplest example of UGC is customer reviews posted on brand platforms. These can take the form of social media reposts, dedicated pages on websites, or screenshots from various review sites. Companies planning to develop this approach commercially must ensure such content leaves no doubts about its authenticity. Businesses suspected of artificially inflating their positive reputation risk losing more than they gain.

A relatively new trend has also emerged in this space – personalized reports. Services used regularly by individuals offer their audience summaries based on their interests, search queries, purchases, and progress in various activities. In December, "year-in-review" reports are particularly popular, and people actively share them on social media. While Western audiences share Spotify Wrapped music summaries, Russian users have started widely sharing personalized selections from Yandex Music.

Local Trends in the Russian Advertising Market

Global trends have a significant impact on the Russian market. However, in the local marketing landscape, they transform, acquire unique characteristics, and compete with other tendencies. Here’s a look at the ones to watch in 2025.

Telegram Potential

Telegram is more than just a messenger. Today, over 50% of Russia's population uses it daily, and the app ranks among the top two most downloaded in the country. By 2025, it has evolved into a fully-fledged advertising platform, especially for the Russian and CIS markets. Its convenient formats, an increasingly sophisticated ad manager, and vast thematic diversity enable various brands to achieve their goals.

A key direction within the messenger is paid social. Telegram itself offers this through its Telegram Ads platform, alongside numerous third-party services that surged in 2024. Even Yandex.Direct introduced a strategy tailored for Telegram. Additionally, the presentation of advertising messages has become more appealing to users.

In other words, ignoring promotion on Telegram seems questionable, as it is becoming increasingly effective and the messenger's audience continues to grow.

Over the past few years, major Russian media outlets have joined Telegram. Now, this channel is considered the most prompt and widely viewed, likely due to the simplicity of the messenger’s interface. Channels created by manufacturers of goods and services often transform into fully-fledged brand media.

Moreover, in-platform mini-games have recently gained popularity in Telegram, allowing any brand to develop and integrate them. Well-designed Telegram bots can streamline communication with clients, collect data, perform segmentation, and personalize offers.

In summary, we strongly recommend that brands targeting Russian and the CIS markets include Telegram promotion in their strategies for obvious reasons: high user demand, various targeting strategies, opportunities for collaboration with influencer channels, gamification, chatbots, and, of course, running their own channels aimed at long-term effectiveness.

New Advertising Features of Yandex

Russia's leading search engine has directed its efforts towards expanding advertising opportunities. What should be utilized in 2025?

  • Paid social within the Yandex ecosystem. Yandex enables the use of user behavior data across its platforms (search, maps, music, subscriptions) for precise audience targeting. For instance, if a user searched for boots, an ad for a suitable product might appear in the Yandex.Market app.

  • Real-time recommendations. The ecosystem can display personalized product suggestions during interactions with its applications. For example, when stopping at a red light, Yandex Maps might show the driver the nearest fast-food restaurant.

  • Cross-promotion in Yandex.Delivery. This involves audience sharing between Yandex and other platforms. For instance, users of the Yandex.Eda app can order products from other grocery chains and see recommendations from partner stores.

  • Marketplace advertising. The Yandex Advertising Network is actively forming partnerships with Russia's leading marketplaces like Ozon, Wildberries, Yandex Market, creating convenient and effective tools for personalized product promotion directly on trading platforms. Yandex.Direct allows brands to target an interested audience, ensuring the budget isn’t wasted on irrelevant users, while also providing quick, detailed statistics and tools for ad optimization.

Why is this important? Marketplaces in Russia are currently at the peak of popularity. A new social trend revolves around instant online gratification: people satisfy this need through endless social media scrolling and quick purchases, which can be made on major marketplaces within minutes. This growing audience explains why more international brands are appearing on these platforms. They provide a fast way to launch sales, promote profiles, and gather user reviews in minimal time. With Yandex integration, brands can further accelerate growth through effective advertising.

As mentioned earlier, Yandex.Direct gained the capability to post ads on Telegram in 2024. It's worth reiterating, as Telegram, marketplaces, and Yandex are now the key channels in Russia for attracting an audience.

Video Content in TOP

Video is a universal format that brands use both for simple product presentations and for engaging audiences in a longer, recurring funnel. The classic approach involves a channel on one of the popular platforms (VK Video, YouTube—which currently operates with restrictions—Dzen, etc.).

The video trend isn’t new, but by 2025 it’s evolving once again. In addition to short clips, live streams are gaining traction and are rapidly being adopted by businesses. Companies sometimes launch their own shows and broadcasts, which their clients enjoy watching.

Of course, these formats require significant budget investments and are unlikely to suit newcomers to the market. However, for ‘status-driven’ businesses looking to strengthen their image, these innovations can yield positive results.

Influencer Marketing

Influencers in 2025 remain trailblazers, setting trends on the internet. However, the demand for advertising has shifted from million-follower channels to local bloggers who gather niche audiences based on shared interests. This allows ads to target a “warmer” audience already centered around a specific topic, with the message delivered by someone they trust.

Advertising formats with influencers vary but usually feature videos: Reels and Stories on Instagram, Shorts on YouTube, and Clips on VK. Less popular (but still relevant) are traditional posts and carousel formats with captions.

Special attention should be given to live streams. Brands are increasingly collaborating with popular streamers when their audience interests align. Ads during streams can be direct (mentions of the advertiser, live product presentations, or detailed product testing) or native (featuring branded items in the frame). Companies also frequently sponsor themed streams.

Why does this work? Real-time advertising without a pre-scripted scenario feels more authentic, leading to greater user trust.

The primary platforms for live streams in Russia and the CIS are Twitch and YouTube, where advertising restrictions are minimal. VK Live is also gaining popularity as a streaming platform.

Brand Collaborations

Brand collaborations are a fresh trend that might seem like it has always existed, but only recently gained significant momentum and began to expand. Such projects combine the audiences of multiple brands, creating an unforgettable user experience for consumers while also producing unique artifacts. Limited editions generate even greater demand around them.

One of the standout examples of 2024 was the collaboration between Dodo Pizza and the popular game Genshin Impact. On the very first day, a quarter of the products were sold out, prompting organizers to shorten the campaign due to unexpectedly high audience interest. Notably, RMAA contributed to this success with a DOOH strategy.

Who else stood out? The clothing brand Befree regularly releases products created in collaboration with young creators. Stars Coffee, which replaced Starbucks in Russia, partnered with the youth media outlet VOICE and the automotive brand OMODA. Designer Alena Akhmadullina teamed up with GUM, and the list goes on.

The conclusion is clear: collaborations are actively used by brands aiming to strengthen their image through partnerships with more popular companies or local industry players. More ‘established’ brands offer their reach, while less known ones bring creative concepts. Together, this creates a powerful effect. This strategy is also well-suited for companies new to the market.

Online TV

Television is evolving. In Russia, online TV and streaming platforms have become widespread, replacing traditional cable channels. Since these systems operate via the Internet, they have naturally attracted the attention of advertisers. These platforms offer new opportunities for promotion through streaming services like Kinopoisk, Okko, and IVI. These services, in turn, are introducing advanced advertising solutions, such as context-based ads tailored to the movies viewers have watched, branded pages for advertisers, and video ads during pauses.

Online TV provides access to a large audience whose interests and preferences are tracked through their searches and viewing history. These services offer advertisers flexible budget settings and a wide range of platforms for ad placement. For example, Yandex’s video network includes over 300 partner platforms, such as TV channels, streaming platforms, video aggregators, and more.

Out Of Home

Outdoor advertising, particularly video screens, is becoming increasingly "smart": sensors, targeting based on time of the day, weather, and traffic conditions allow for maximum precision in reaching the most likely consumer. These technologies also help optimize advertising campaign budgets.

Interactive advertising platforms are also on the rise, such as ‘ground-level’ screens at transit stops that respond to motion and touch from passersby.

Due to the overwhelming amount of visual noise, one of the biggest trends in outdoor advertising is minimalism—or, conversely, a bold departure from traditional norms. This includes using 3D elements, innovative lighting, or other features that make advertisements stand out in the urban landscape.

While digitalization progressed rapidly across Russian regions in 2024, it has extended to the CIS in 2025. For instance, in Uzbekistan, DOOH now accounts for more than 60% of the total advertising market budget. In Kazakhstan, digital advertising structures are rapidly emerging, primarily in Astana and Almaty. A similar trend is visible in Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, where 95% of the country’s DOOH advertising surfaces are concentrated.

We strongly recommend "pushing the boundaries" of outdoor advertising opportunities in 2025, both within Russia and across the CIS. It is highly likely that the results will be significantly more impactful.

Let's summarize

Predictions are predictions. Surely, 2025 will bring its fair share of surprises—we hope for pleasant ones. However, one thing is clear: the Russian advertising market in the new year will be a blend of technology and the creative use of available resources. Both are in abundance. The key is to choose the tools that will truly be effective for your brand.
