FAQ: Print Advertising in Russia

Russian print media continue to face pressure due to the growth of digital media. However, regional publications maintain their audience and popularity, while federal newspapers are gradually losing readers. Local and niche publications are showing growth despite the overall decline.

Among the popular federal publications are "Rossiyskaya Gazeta," "Komsomolskaya Pravda," "Moskovsky Komsomolets," and "Izvestia." These publications have high circulation and a wide audience, and they also offer electronic versions of their materials.

Popular magazines such as "Vokrug Sveta," "Marie Claire," and "Psychologies" continue to attract a large number of readers. These publications have seen an increase in their audience, despite the overall decline in print media popularity.

The main challenges include competition with digital media, declining sales, and reduced advertising revenues. There are also issues with circulation and changes in consumer preferences. However, print media remains an important tool for the target audience, especially in regions and among the older generation.

Print media remains an important source for shaping public opinion, particularly on political and social issues. Many publications actively participate in discussions of current topics and in the information war.

Despite the growth of digital platforms, about 30% of Russians still prefer to receive news through print publications, especially in regions and among the older age group.

The most attention is drawn to topics such as politics, economics, social issues, and, of course, entertainment publications, such as news about celebrities and show business.

The revenues of Russian print media come from sales of copies (both retail and subscription) and advertising revenues. In recent years, there has been growth in income from subscriptions and online advertising, despite the decline in traditional retail sales.

The Russian print media market continues to face pressure, but signs of stabilization are observed. The print advertising market has shown growth from 23 billion to 27.1 billion rubles.

The main players in the market include government publications such as "Rossiyskaya Gazeta," as well as large private media holdings, such as the "Komsomolskaya Pravda" publishing house and "Arguments and Facts."

Government publications continue to occupy a significant share of the market, especially in the areas of news, analytics, and legal information. However, their share is decreasing due to competition from private and regional media.

Private media holdings, such as "Komsomolskaya Pravda," actively develop their business models, which include both print publications and digital platforms. This allows them to retain their audience and attract advertisers.

The leaders among industry publications include publications such as "Tekhnika Molodyozhi," "Kommersant," and specialized magazines covering business, finance, and technology.

Economic instability affects the print media market by reducing advertising budgets and the purchasing power of the audience, which exacerbates the financial problems of most publishers.

The audience of print media comprises about 56% of all Russians over the age of 16. The main audience consists of people over 35, especially in regions where trust in print publications remains. Meanwhile, younger audiences prefer digital versions and entertainment publications, while the older audience continues to read print editions, focusing on news and analysis.

In Russia's regions, print media retains its significance, especially among the older generation. Local newspapers and magazines are often supported by government subsidies and are popular among local residents.

The youth audience actively reads entertainment and educational magazines, such as "Secrets of the Stars," which has a broad reach among the 18-35 age group.

Cultural factors, such as an interest in local culture and traditions, influence the popularity of regional and specialized publications that reflect these interests and preferences.

In large cities, there is a decline in interest in print media, with an increase in the consumption of digital media. However, in rural areas, print publications remain an important source of information.

Business publications, such as "Vedomosti," "Kommersant," and "RBK," remain popular among business structures and entrepreneurs, providing information on the market, economy, and legal issues.

A special license is not required for the distribution of print media; however, registration with Roskomnadzor is mandatory if the circulation exceeds 1,000 copies. This is necessary for official recognition of the publication as a media outlet. Publications with smaller circulations can be published without registration but are not considered official media.

According to Russian legislation, all print publications must indicate the age category on the front page. This is required to protect children from harmful content. Categories include: 0+, 6+, 12+, 16+, and 18+.

Penalties are imposed for the lack of age labeling on print publications, and the circulation may be confiscated. This applies to all publications, including crime stories and adult content.

Publications with an 18+ age label must not be distributed among minors. Distributors are required to monitor this, and in retail, such publications are often sold in opaque packaging to prevent access by children.

The responsibility for the accuracy of the labeling and the adherence to age restrictions lies with both the publishers and distributors. Violating these requirements results in fines and other sanctions. Publications without age labeling may be fined, and their circulation may be confiscated. This is especially relevant for publications with sensitive content, such as crime or adult materials.

Starting in 2024, clarifications were introduced to the rules for labeling age categories on subscription catalogs. Now, the age category label must be indicated not only on the front page but also in subscription catalogs.

Russian legislation prohibits publications containing calls for extremism, violence, incitement to national hatred, and the promotion of pornography. Since 2022, a ban has been introduced on the promotion of non-traditional sexual relations and gender changes.

State support for print media includes compensation for the delivery of socially significant publications, as well as subsidies for regional media. Specifically, about 0.5 billion rubles were allocated for these purposes.

Approximately 15-20% of the total revenue of Russian publishers comes from digital products, such as websites, paid articles, and digital subscriptions.

Digitalization has led to a reduction in the circulation of print publications. However, digital versions of magazines and newspapers are starting to generate a larger portion of the revenue. Many publishers offer combined packages that include both print and digital versions.

Business and analytical publications, such as "Vedomosti," are actively developing digital subscriptions, which allows them to attract an audience that values online content.

Print publications will continue to exist, but their market share will decline. It is important to adapt content for digital platforms, offering various formats such as podcasts and video versions of materials.

Digital versions of newspapers and magazines are actively developing, and their share in the revenue of publishers is about 25%, especially among business and news publications.

Digital versions offer the advantage of quick updates, accessibility on various devices, and usually lower costs for readers, which contributes to their growing popularity.
